Belhaven track star has a bold ability to stay consistent during COVID-19

JACKSON, Miss. (BVM) 鈥斅 For a college athlete, consistency remains a top priority. And for Kelsi Bouldin, being consistent is a characteristic she鈥檚 always possessed.聽

Ever since her days at St. Joseph Catholic High School, Bouldin has been preparing for the journey ahead, both in athletics and academics. And no matter what was laid out in front of her, Bouldin always remained diligent. Because of this, her high school career has resonated with her now successful career at Belhaven University.

Her freshman year started off on the right foot, but quickly, Bouldin found herself in the position of being the lone female sprinter once again during her sophomore year on the track and field team.聽

鈥淚t wasn鈥檛 abnormal,” Bouldin said. “It was like that for me in high school, so I was used to it.鈥澛

Still, in the midst of small numbers, she is now accompanied by six other female sprinters that show up to practice beside her. Looking forward to a new season with her new teammates, an unforeseen obstacle ripped her junior season from her grasp.聽

The COVID-19 pandemic hit America hard, and college athletes were forced to halt competition. But with overwhelming love for her sport, Bouldin wanted the season to continue despite the pandemic. With some self-reflection, Bouldin realized that cancellation of the season was the best option.

Now in a world full of COVID precautions, Bouldin has not allowed the pandemic to affect her too much. Her typical schedule of working at Starbucks, being a full-time student, and getting faster never ceased.聽

In due time, Bouldin was back on the track, preparing for her senior season. And Since Bouldin鈥檚 senior track campaign has just recently started, it has presented her with the opportunity to compete against professional and other collegiate athletes.

As she continues to prepare for future competitions, Bouldin continues to focus on leaving a lasting impact and improving her personal bests. Bouldin is channeling her desire to contribute to the team as she has set her eyes on breaking the current Belhaven record at the 4x200m relay distance. Bouldin will also still compete in the 60-meter dash, 200-meter dash, and the 4x400m.

Continuing to set her own personal goals, Bouldin was awarded 2020 Track Athlete of the Year honors. Being a model teammate and athlete, Bouldin deserved the award.

Junior sprinter Maurissa Winford speaks highly of Bouldin as she stated, 鈥淜elsi is a very strong and competitive athlete. She鈥檚 a very down to earth person to be around. She may be really relaxed before a run, but once she鈥檚 ready to race, she鈥檚 a powerhouse.鈥澛

Now, with graduation approaching, Bouldin is taking everything step by step as her health administration major gives her many future possibilities. Her unwavering commitment has allowed her to exceed expectations, and she pledges to continue to break any barriers in her way.

鈥淒o what you鈥檙e supposed to now, Bouldin said. 鈥淪o you don鈥檛 have to regret not doing it later.鈥
