AUM women’s basketball tabbed fifth in East; Black, Johnson named top newcomers

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AUM PRESS RELEASE) – The Auburn Montgomery women’s basketball team was picked to place fifth in the Gulf South Conference preseason rankings while Derienne Black and Tyra Johnson were tabbed as the GSC’s top newcomers.

Black, a junior transfer from Birmingham Southern College, joins the Warhawks after spending time with the Panthers for two seasons.

As a Panther, she earned Southern Athletic Association all-tournament team honors and was named to the SAA all-conference team. The league leader in points and steals, she averaged 16.2 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 2.9 steals during her career.

Johnson transfers to AUM after spending two years at the NCAA DI level with Auburn and Troy University. As a freshman, Johnson played 20 games, averaging just under eight minutes per contest while scoring three points per game. With the Trojans, Johnson netted 180 points on the year and earned four double-digit scoring efforts.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Gulf South Conference has been split into two divisions for the 2020-21 basketball season. The Warhawks will compete in the East Division alongside Valdosta State, Lee, Montevallo, West Florida, West Georgia, and Shorter. The remaining six teams make up the West Division.

AUM was selected to finish fifth by the opposing coaches in the east division, finishing in front of West Florida and Shorter. Lee was picked to finish in the division’s top spot, followed by Montevallo, West Georgia, and Valdosta State.

The Warhawks will open their season with a home matchup against Shorter on Saturday, December 12 beginning at 4 p.m.
