University of Maine postpones fall sports season

ORONO, Maine (BVM) — With athletic conferences around the country deciding against playing sports in the fall, the University of Maine announced its intentions by postponing play for the 2020 season. With its recent announcement, the University of Maine decided that fall sports would be too large of a risk moving forward.

Like the University of Maine, other universities within the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) football conference faced a similar situation. With universities having fall sports in different conferences, the CAA decided to postpone its football season. , the conference talked about playing at a later date.

鈥淭he conference expressed a strong commitment to exploring the possibility of conducting a football season during the Spring of 2021, and will continue to analyze this scenario as more information becomes available and conditions continue to evolve.鈥

The Black Bears are coming off an up-and-down 2019 season where they finished 6-6. The team was unable to successfully follow up its 2018 season, which saw the Black Bears go 10-4 and advance to their first FCS semifinals.

The university鈥檚 other fall sports programs, field hockey, soccer and cross country will be postponed as well, with the

鈥淲ith the health and safety of its member institutions鈥 communities, the importance of successful institutional campus reopenings and the overall well-being of its student-athletes as its top priorities, the America East Conference Board of Presidents announced today a postponement, not cancellation, of all America East fall sport athletics competition and championships for the duration of the first semester.鈥

The Black Bears fall sports teams were looking for an uptick in their records this year, with the women鈥檚 soccer team coming off a 5-8-1 season and the field hockey team coming off an 8-10 season in 2019.
